Mandla back into battle

ON THE day the world celebrated Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday, his grandson Mandla Mandela was back in court to fight over family graves. The case was postponed in the Mthatha High Court. Last month the Mvezo chief was ordered to return the remains of his grandfather’s three children – Thembekile, Makgatho and nine-month-old Makaziwe – to Qunu after he removed them in 2011. While Mandla subsequently admitted he did not have the right to determine where his aunt and uncle were buried, he believes he should have a say in where his father Makgatho’s remains are laid to rest. This emerged in an affidavit to a rescission application handed to the Mthatha High Court, in which Mandla explained why his father’s remains should have been kept in Mvezo. Mandla’s rescission application was meant to be heard yesterday but the case was postponed after his aunt Makaziwe Mandela’s lawyers filed a notice to oppose the application on Wednesday.
