POLICE in Transkei have expressed concern at the high number of rapes in the region following reports of several more incidents since the weekend. This comes on the back of an announcement by police that they are searching for three men connected to the recent rapes of women in Mthatha and Mqanduli. The Daily Dispatch on Tuesday carried separate reports about the rape of a 110-year-old woman from a village near Centane and about a 22-year-old woman gang-raped in Lady Frere at the weekend. The woman was allegedly raped by four men. Two suspects have since been arrested. Fed up with being targeted by criminals, a group of protesters made up largely of women and children from Manzana in Ngcobo yesterday marched to the local police station where they handed a memorandum to the safety and liaison district manager in the Chris Hani District, Sizwe Sikwebu. At least six people, including five elderly women, have reportedly been raped and murdered in the area since last year.
